This October, I went thrifting (treasure hunting) with one mission: to find something beautiful with a little bit of mystery to it. On my recent hunt, I found a set of vintage crystal champagne coupes. They’re elegant, dazzling, and just old-money enough to look like they’ve seen a few secrets.
Then I got to thinking: what if a glamorous cocktail was a little bit more haunted looking?
Meet the Black Widow Rose Cocktail. A web of melted marshmallow clinging to the rim, a dark ruby pomegranate rose blooms at the bottom of the glass, and crisp, effervescent champagne gets poured over the top. One creepy black spider makes the whole thing a haunted delight.
It’s sweet, tart and dangerously refreshing. Perfect for your next Halloween dinner party, a girls’ night, or a cocktail party that needs a little drama.
How to Make: The Black Widow Rose Cocktail
1. Freeze the roses. Pour pomegranate juice into a rose-shaped ice cube tray and freeze until solid. Make them the night before so they’re ready to use when you are ready.
2. Add the Rose Ice. Drop one pomegranate rose into each glass.
3. Create the web. Melt marshmallows in microwave for about 15 seconds until gooey, stretch them out to make a cobweb look by wrapping around the glass rims artistically to your liking. Make sure you work quickly, since it sets fast. (I had to practice a few times on extra glasses to get my web making skills just right:)
4. Pour. Top with your favorite chilled champagne and watch the rose swirl. As the pomegranate rose ice melts, it gradually infuses the crisp champagne with a tart, dark ruby sweetness. It makes a gorgeous presentation for your guests.
5. Add the Black Widow. Place a black plastic spider on the side of the rim on the web. These are for fun looks only, so make sure to remove them before sipping.
Hosting tip: Web the glasses up to an hour ahead and keep the ice roses in the freezer until the very last minute. Just make sure to leave a little space to get the ice cubes through without breaking the web. Your guests get the spooky vibes, and you get to relax and enjoy your own party.
