Dreaming of a closet that is organized and beautiful? Is your closet a disaster like mine? This week I decided to change that. I can’t find a thing I’m looking for. It’s stressful and time consuming when you can’t find a shoe or a top wear. My dream closet idea is just to get organized. After moving last year I haven’t made the time.

Let’s do this together. I’m here to help with your dream closet idea. I know how hard it can be to organize a closet. I own tons of clothes I don’t even wear. Last night I got frustrated and completely took every single item out of my closet. I’m starting over fresh. My empty closet is so refreshing. Almost like I have a new life! I highly recommend doing the same, just start over. This way you have room to work and possibly redesign the layout by adding in or taking out shelves or cabinets.

Clothes

Now comes the hard part. Getting rid of things. You know what they say, if you haven’t worn it in 6 months… get rid of it. There are options of course. Sell it, Donate or trash it. Let’s start with three piles. Is it worth selling? Is it valuable? List it on Poshmark. Is it ripped, torn, or just plain unusable? Trash it. Can you still use it but simply don’t like the way it fits? Take it to the Goodwill or your local donation center where someone else can appreciate it.

Now that we have our piles sorted out. Let’s hang up the clothes we actually wear. Color coordinated as much as possible. This always look great when I do this. Start with white, then go to off white, to gray and so on. For all the clothes you are keeping but don’t wear often such as summer clothes, (now that we are going into winter). Box them up and store them in a garage or storage unit. This is what I decided to do. I have clothes I still want to keep even though I don’t wear them, but they are really just in the way on a daily basis, like my fancy dresses. I never wear them anymore but they are too pretty to not keep.

Handbags

Once your daily essentials are hung, let’s move onto handbags. My problem is right now I don’t have any cubicles or space to put my handbags. I decided to order a Billy bookcase with glass doors from Ikea. I can’t wait to get this built and placed in my room. I’ll be putting it next to my desk in my bedroom so I can admire my special handbags. If you are near an Ikea store, go check out all the bookshelves they have to offer. Everyone has a different space so you need to decide what works best for you. I have seen many ladies I know get the Pax system from Ikea and it works very well if you have the money and the space to install it. If not use what you have or look on Amazon for any bookshelf in your budget that suits your closet space.

Shoes

Shoes are probably the most exciting thing to organize for most ladies. Start with getting rid of the shoes that are too worn out. Trash or donate them if possible. Have them repaired if you love them too much. We want clean shoes displayed in our closets, it just makes it look like we are walking into a department store and that is always uplifting!

Start with an inexpensive shoe rack from Amazon or the Container Store that will fit in your closet the way you like. There are so many to choose from. Get inspired and look on Pinterest for ideas. Place your favorite shoes eye level if possible and boots and sneakers on the bottom level. This usually looks the best. I guess i’m lucky to have had lots of practice organizing shoes from merchandising my consignment boutique in the past. Hours and hours I spent on what looks the best. It’s pretty fun organizing shoes when you have the time.
